DirecTV question: If I purchase a HD receiver off a thirdparty website, will it work with the service...?

I currently have whole-home dvr service consisting of a hddvr in one room, hd in another room, and a standard receiver in the living room. If I upgrade the standard one to HD from buying one off a website will it work once I plug it in or what has to be done?
